Intro |
Physiognomy is related to a number of psychological and other concepts that have not been structured into a database-compatible format. Some of these concepts are listed below |

Explanations of Facial Features |
Forehead Area Eyebrow Curvature |
| Flat eyebrows |
Eyebrow hairs form a relatively straight line |
| Curved eyebrows |
Eyebrow hairs have a rounded appearance not in life. |
| Arched eyebrows |
Eyebrow hair have a kink, or sharp angular break . |
Eyebrow Height |
| Low eyebrows |
Eyebrows are very close to the eyes |
| Medium eyebrows |
Eyebrows are an average distance from the eyes |
| High eyebrows |
Eyebrows are distant from the eyes, higher on the forehead Miscellaneous |
Forehead and Eyebrow Signs |
| Horizontal wrinkles |
Permanently etched and prominent wrinkles running across the forehead . |
| Single vertical dagger | One deep permanent vertical wrinkle in the glabellas between the eyebrows |
| Widow's peak hairline | The hairline forms a sharp angle in the center of the forehead, forming a point or peak (an inverted peak) |
Ear |
| Small ears | The outer (visible) ear is especially small relative to the head |
| Large ears | The outer ear is especially large relative to the head |
Ear Position |
| Low ears | The ears are especially low on the head |
| Middle ears | The ears are in a normal position on the head |
| High ears | The ears are especially high on the head |
Miscellaneous Ear Signs |
| Pointed ears | Upper part of outer ear is pointed, like a Vulcan's ear |
| Large ear lobes | The ear lobe (lower part of outer ear) is especially large relative to the whole ear |
Eyes and Eyelids |
Slant of the Eye from Inner to Outer Corner: |
| Eyes slant up | When drawing a line through the inner and outer corner of the eye, the line slants up laterally |
| Eyes slant down | The line slants down laterally |
Size of Iris |
| Small | The iris (colored part of the eyeball) is exceptionally small in diameter, or beady |
| Large | The iris is exceptionally large and partially hidden by the lids |
Space Between the Eyes |
| Close together | The eyes are especially close together, crowded to the midline relative to the whole face. |
| Far apart | The eyes are especially distant from each other, closer to the temples relative to the whole face |
Set of the Eyes |
| Deep set eyes | The eyes are especially deep in their sockets |
| Protruding eyes | The eyes seemingly pop out of their sockets (a permanent condition) |
Involving the Nose |
| The nose consists of several features. The bridge of the nose is similar to the ridgepole of a tent that holds up the skin of the nose. The nasal wings are the fleshy appendages that form the outside of the nostrils. The septum separates the two nostrils. The tip of the nose is the most anterior part of the nose. | |
Size of Nose |
| Small nose | Nose is especially tiny relative to the face |
| Large nose | Nose is especially big relative to the face |
Shape of Nose |
| Chiseled nose | The nasal wings are pronouced and stand out from the nose |
| Aqualine nose | The tip of the nose projects forward and down, curving the septum |
Nose Profile |
| Straight profile | The bridge of the nose is flat in profile |
| Convex profile | The bridge of the nose is curved out in profile |
| Concave profile | The bridge of the nose is curved inwards in profile |
Mouth, Jaw, and Lip |
Fullness of Lips |
| Full lips | Red parts of the lips are especially wide in the vertical direction |
| Thin lips | Red parts of the lips are especially narrow in the vertcal direction |
Jaw Width: |
| Narrow jaw | Width of jaw is especially less wide than the rest of the face |
| Wide jaw | Width of jaw is especially more wide than the rest of the face |
Direction of Lip at Corners |
| Downturned | The lip line is curved down at the corners |
| Upturned | The lip line is curved up at the corners |
Miscellaneous Mouth Signs |
| Cupid lips | The margin of the red part of the upper lip is especially shaped like Cupid's bow |
| Square jaw | The jaw is particularly wide in the chin, making the chin flat on the bottom and the jaw square and angular |
Features in the Cheeks |
Height of Cheek Bones |
| High cheekbones | The cheekbones are especially close to the eyeballs almost crowding the eyesocket |
| Low cheekbones | The cheekbones are especially low, away from the eyeballs |
Distance Between Cheeks |
| Close together | The cheek area is especially narrow for the face and the cheekbones are closer to the nose |
| Far apart | The cheek area is especially wide for the face with the cheekbones extending laterally |
Miscellaneous Cheek Signs |
| Round cheeks | The cheeks are especially rounded and full, smoothing out the cheekbones - the "Far apart" illustration also has rounded cheeks, but the others do not |
| Nasolabial furrow beyond lip corners | The nasolabial furrow is that wrinkle running vertically from the area of the nasal wings to the area of the lip corners - check this box if the nasolabial furrow runs lower than the lip corners |
Features in the Chin |
Shape of Chin |
| Round chin | The chin is nicely rounded without angles |
| Square chin | The chin is angular, flat on the bottom and noticeably squared off |
| Pointed chin | The chin line comes to an obvious single angle at its tip |
Length of Chin |
| Short chin | The distance between the teeth and the tip of the chin is exceptionally short |
| Long chin | The distance between the teeth and the tip of the chin is exceptionally long |
Chin Width: |
| Narrow chin | The lateral width of the chin boss is exceptionally narrow; the extreme is a pointed chin |
| Wide chin | The lateral width of the chin boss is exceptionally wide, closer to the width of the mandible at the angle of the mandible |
Miscellaneous Chin Signs |
| Dimpled chin | The chin has a single depression in the midline of the chin boss (not two dimples on either side nor cheek dimples) |
| Weak chin | A receding chin or one that slopes posterior rather than outwards |
